My New Favorite App for Cooking Meals
Today I wanted to talk about my favorite app at the moment. It's called Big Oven and if you cook meals at all then you need this in your life. Seriously, it makes it so much easier.
I HATE to cook. I don't enjoy any part of it from grocery shopping to actually putting the meals together. I think it's boring and I'd rather be playing with makeup or watching YouTube videos to be quite honest. But it is a necessary part of life and it's so much cheaper and healthier to cook rather than eat out so that's why I do it.
In the past I would use a binder that I stored recipes I found from the internet and pulled out of magazines. I thought that would keep me organized and make it easier to cook. When I would go grocery shopping I would "try" to plan out meals and write down the ingredients for the meals I wanted to cook and then purchase all my ingredients at once. But then life would get in the way and it would get harder and harder to plan out meals. Lacking on time I would find myself at the grocery store without a grocery list and I would just throw a bunch of frozen meals into my cart and a bunch of ingredients I was just guessing I needed. Then I would get home and have a lot of food but not have anything to cook a meal.
And then I found an app I downloaded on my Kindle called Big Oven and it literally changed the way I do things. Basically how I use it is I log in to my account on my computer and that's where I type in recipes that I have already. Also it has a feature much like Pinterest so if you are on a website that has a recipe you can "pin" it to your Big Oven database and it will transfer all the ingredients and instructions into your account. Another feature the app has is it already has a HUGE database of recipes that you can browse so if you are in the mood to try something different there is no way you won't find a yummy new recipe to share with your family.
Once I have all the recipes I want added to my account that's when I start planning my meals. Usually I will do two weeks at a time and you have the option of selecting recipes for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. You just click and drag your recipe of choice to the date you would like to prepare it. It's so quick and easy. From there you can select each recipe and add it to your master Grocery List on your Big Oven account so you know exactly what to pick up at the store the next time you go. You have the option to cross things off (like butter for instance) if you already have it on hand.
Then you just take your smart phone with you with a list of all the groceries you will need for the week and you are good to go. It also has the option to email or print out your list in case you don't want the app on your phone and just want to use the desktop version. I particularly love the grocery list feature as it categorizes each item you need by section in the grocery store (canned goods, meat, produce, etc) so you are not going back and forth through the different aisles and wasting a bunch of time like I used to do.
The app is free to download but you can also choose a pro version that offers features that the free version does not. I have found that I can live without the pro version as the free version does everything I really need it to do already. So if you're like me and you want to streamline how you prepare meals everyday and make it so much easier to shop for groceries then I know you will love it and it's definitely worth checking out because it's free!
