DIY Perfume Stand

For some time now I've been wanting a new setup to display my perfume collection and I had an idea of what I wanted.  I wanted a two tiered cake stand but let me just say, these are impossible to find.  I've literally been looking months for one and not only that but even just a plain jane cake stand is super expensive.  So what's a thrifty girl to do but make her own exactly how she wants it?

So yesterday I was browsing Hobby Lobby for a different project and I found myself over in the clearance section when low and behold I found the perfect "stand" pieces for my cake stand.  They were super heavy and well made which I thought would be perfect to securely hold heavy perfume bottles.

I headed straight from Hobby Lobby to the Dollar Tree to look for some melamine plates that I can use and I came across these silver tin platter plates.  They had round ones and oval ones so I bought one of each and immediately brought them home to get started on my project.

I played around with the plates and stands since all four of them are different sizes and found the layout I liked the best.

Then was the big decision, what color was I going to paint the wood?  With it having a rustic color already I decided on a shabby chic look so I headed into my basement to grab some white acrylic paint and a small paint brush and I quickly gave them both a coat.

I had to wait one hour for the paint to dry before I gave it another coat.

Then after another hour it was time to get out my sandpaper to rough up the edges and lightly sand the length of the wood stands both vertically and horizontally.

After I had them distressed to my liking I grabbed a high temp hot glue gun and glued the stands to the plates.

Once everything was cooled down I took it into my closet to set it on my makeup stand and I placed all my perfume bottles on it.

I love how having a tall stand at the bottom give me room to put other things.  The two glass square containers at the bottom can be purchased at Dollar Tree for $1 each.  Target has a version exactly like it and I'm wanting to say they are around $5 there?  Once I discovered the dollar store had them I stocked up and have several of these on hand because you can find so many uses for them.  In this case I store my roll on perfumes in one and my mini perfume vials in another.

Here's a close up of the stand.

I just love it so much and the whole project cost me less than $12!  Not only that but I have a custom piece perfect just for me!  And you don't have to store perfumes on it, you can store food on it if you host parties a lot or anything else you can think to put on it.  Maybe even your My Little Pony collection, who knows?
